Irene’s story

“I’m proud of producing food, because that is what I love doing the most. Producing something delicious and serving it to others makes me excited.”

Irene is 19 years-old and currently studying for a certificate in Hospitality and Accommodations Operations at Pearlcrest Hospitality Training Institute in Uganda.

Irene has always been passionate about food and cooking, and used to want to pursue cooking in her spare time. However, since coming to Pearlcrest her dreams have changed and she is now considering pursuing cooking as her main career.

She says, “I’m proud of producing food, because that is what I love doing the most. Producing something delicious and serving it to others makes me excited.”

Since beginning her studies, she has learnt cooking and housekeeping skills that she applies at home. “I always teach my mum and sister the new techniques and skills I have learnt when I go home for holidays,” she says.

Although her family struggled financially, Irene’s mum has always supported her passion for cooking. She recounts, “I faced financial challenges because my mum was single-handedly looking after, and financially supporting, both me and my siblings. When my mum found out about the institute, she encouraged me to take up the course because of my love for cooking.”

As a school, Pearlcrest specialises in providing young women with hospitality and accommodation management training. Irene chose to study at Pearlcrest because the institution offers the chance to learn a wide range of skills, which will help her find employment. The opportunities at the school give students the chance to develop both personal and professional strengths.

Irene says, “I would recommend the institute because it offers all the hospitality management training, and also helps you grow as a person.”

As part of her studies, Irene was also paired with a mentor, who has helped her understand the importance of putting love and passion into everything she does. Staying in touch with her mentor has helped Irene remain motivated in her day-to-day life.

In the future, Irene hopes to work in a five-star hotel. “I want to earn some income, then start up my own business. I hope to manage my own business by applying the skills I have learnt at Pearlcrest.”
