Charlie’s Story
“I gained the love of learning here. I have learned to be open, to be humble and that education never ends.” Charlie
Charlie is a student at Ecole Yarani, our local partner in Côte d’Ivoire, and is determined to become a chef. Initially, her dream seemed unattainable but thanks to WONDER foundation’s support, it is now within reach.
During her time at Yarani, Charlie learned a number of skills including professional cleaning, which she now applies wherever she is. She has also gained a deep love for learning which keeps her passionate and focused on her future goals. “The school has taught me to be open, to be humble and that education never ends”, she explained.
Out of everyone in the school, her mentor Lydie is her biggest inspiration as she deeply cares about her training and wants to get the best out of her. Her unwavering smile and constant good humour in face of all the difficulties she encounters make her a great mentor. Thanks to her, Charlie was determined in her studies: “I am proud of having taken advantage of the training here. I didn’t put it to waste,” she stated.

Even during the pandemic, when the school was forced to close, Charlie followed her classes through WhatsApp. Seeing her commitment, her 12-year-old sister is now dedicated to following in her footsteps.
Thinking back on her experience Charlie recognised that the school offers a holistic formation and real opportunities for a stable job. “The school has given me the basics and I look forward to gaining more experience”, she told us. During her time there her dream has crystallised and has become a concrete possibility. “Now I would like to work in a top restaurant or hotel because I can continue to learn,” she concluded.
This year, WONDER has also supported the education of 9 other students for a whole school year. In Charlie’s eyes this contribution does not go unrecognised: “Thank you. Your support goes a long way and helps a wide range of women achieve their projects and dreams” she stated warmly.
