Sponsor a nurse in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Help us support trainee nurses at the Higher Institute of Nursing Sciences (ISSI) in Kinshasha, educating women to both save lives and build a professional career for themselves.
Conflicts throughout the 1990s destroyed much of DRC's infrastructure and, whilst it has rich natural resources, many millions of its citizens still live in extreme poverty. The situation for children is bleak too, with roughly one in ten children not living to see their fifth birthday. Well trained nurses and midwives have a key role in saving these children's lives, and many more.
Sponsoring a nurse’s qualification results in tangible development. Training local people as community health nurses and midwives helps to ensure that care is targeted, sensitive to local needs and more widely available. It also contributes to positive changes in the lives of those who are trained, their households and communities.
Grace, graduating in July 2014 is one example of how every pound truly counts.
"I would like to thank my sponsors for this opportunity. During my work placement in Kimbondo I saw more than 100 people per week, it was a joy to be of use. Every day I’m learning new things about my profession and my attitude towards work and health has grown more positive. Without this sponsorship it would have been hard for me to achieve my goal." - Grace, student at ISSI
DRC is not suffering from shortage of people willing to make nursing their career. What is urgent however is financial support allowing them to pursue their dream and contribute to DRC's growth and development. By donating £1 a day you can train a lifesaver to save more lives, prevent the spread of disease and undertake timely interventions to prevent condition progression.
